Live Video Interviews??
Sep 8th 2008
I’ve been wanting to do live video interviews for a long time now. The closest I got, a couple years ago, I did two different *recorded video interviews* with Shawn Casey and Joel Comm. They turned out to be some of the highest converting interviews I ever did. (In the Joel Comm interview, that’s where I did the ‘Adsense Pirate’ character you see above.)
It was a major pain in the ass 2 years ago. (and this was just *recorded interviews*) Todd Gross helped me orchestrate and record the streams as a 3rd party. And then he edited all the streams together. Like I said - a major pain.
I also did a product called Web Traffic Videos right after the above interviews. I used Camtasia to record a skype video conversation and it worked *ok*. Skype didn’t like recording the camera for more than a few minutes at a time - it got choppier and choppier. I’m still concerned this will happen.
Anyway, so, today we set out to test all the top live streaming video services to see which (if any) could handle my long sought desire to do live streaming video interviews. I checked out Ustream, Justin.tv, Stickam, Mogulus, BlogTV, and PalTalk. (PalTalk sponsored that viral ‘your name is running for president’ campaign last month - so, I figured I’d throw them in there.)
Here’s the video review that I did of all 6 sites.
Video Services Review - Broadcast your self LIVE
Remember now, I was looking for the best service for *one particular function* and that was to do Live Streaming Video Interviews. The above video is recorded using BlogTV. It shows a side by side stream of my co-host; but when the show was live it was picture in picture.
Sadly, the technology is still not quite there yet. However, I still may do some live interviews with BlogTV. My only other alternative is to use Skype Video Chat and record it with Camtasia. (My recent test seemed better than the past — and I’m really close to just biting the bullet and getting a Mac b/c everything like this I see from a Mac is phenomenal!)
Alright, that’s it for now. Please let me know what you think of this review and feel free to let me know if there’s any other sites we missed.
Keep Having Fun,

Harris,
I thought that was you! I was clicking around and saw you doing some testimonial, Googled you, and ended up here. I haven’t seen you since the old G’Comm days!
Glad you are doing well, very impressive!
As for the article, I absolutely agree in the power of Video and have been a big advocate since discovering it’s power a few weeks ago. It’s kind of ironic but I just recorded my very fist-ever video earlier tonight, here is the link: http://tinyurl.com/5t7j23
Regarding my video…when I watched it myself, I noticed that I am saying “ummm” after every sentence, kind of like someone I remember back at our old work place (SB). Anyway, I thought it was kind of cute back then but when it’s you doing it, it’s more embarrassing than cute. It will give me something to work on for my next few videos at least. Hopefully by the time I become a master of the video, they will have this type of software perfected.
Take care!

Yep, sadly, none are ready for prime time yet. Good comparison. Wonder if it’ll be better in 6 months?

Hey Harris,
Thanks for taking the time to check this out!
What difference would having a Mac make when you’re using web based apps?
I know the screen capture stuff really rocks!

Howard,
Right - re: the Mac -> I was referring to the screen capture & video recording & easy editing & final product. Nothing to do with the web based apps that I reviewed.

So far I’ve conducted and posted over 70 video interviews. Two were produced with my shirt pocket Exlim camera and the other 68 were done using Skype video.
I think I’ve tried or played with most of the applications and sites, including the ones you show cased. I’ve found Skype the best solution by far for one to one interviews. When combined with the Mac only software Call Recorder by ecam it is video interview heaven. As long as both sides have a great connection, a current computer and a good camera it works and works well. The Mac built in camera gives me the best pictures and sound and the Logitech 9000 the best on a PC. One of the applications you did not mention that is worth a look see is ooVoo.com.

Harris,
I spent a few hours today playing with BlogTV on my MacBook Pro and was wondering how you did the recording part of it? Was that via one of the stock Mac applications or are you using a third-party product like ecam? I’m still kind of new to Mac (< 1 year) and for example, just discovered how to do the copy screen to buffer vs. copy screen to desktop image the other day.

Bill - oh yeah, we go to the ooVoo.com site but thought it was just ‘video chat rooms’ and left. I’ll give it another look. And thanks alot for your comment overall.
Tim - there’s a record button on BlogTV when you’re actually broadcasting a show. Nothing to do with the ol’ Mac *or* PC for that matter.

Just a tip: What we do on Ustream is using Ventrilo to talk back and forth (no lag), then pipe the audio from Vent right into Ustream using SoundFlower on the Mac. No lag at all between the two people. There is a lag before it gets to the folks watching, but they’ll never tell because they are listening to the Ventrilo audio.

Harris,
As far as I’m concerned, you’re a pioneer when it comes to the creative use of video in internet marketing. You’ve been doing it longer and more creatively than just about anyone I know. Keep up the good work, brother!
