40 Year Virgin

Oct 23rd 2008

Well, I’m 40 now.

I celebrated with my family, friends, and some business friends in Las Vegas. I decided to do it at the same resort while JV Alert was going on. Ken MacArthur (founder of JV Alert) was kind enough to let my family and friends get in on the group rate. So, that part of the deal worked out fine.

Juggling family, friends, and biz people — well, that didn’t work out so well.

I barely got to see any of the JV Alert show.

My wife had an okay time.

My mom felt kinda left out and un-special.

My kids seemed to have the most fun .

Others told me they had a good time, but not a great time.

I’m the type of person who has a better time if everyone else at my party has a great time too. So, I had a good time myself - but at the end of the day - oh well, I guess I’m glad it’s over.

I’m done “turning 40″ and now I *am 40*. And if anyone else wishes me a happy birthday, I swear I’ll scream. (or just smile, say ‘thank you’, and silently scream on the inside )

The party was actually split in two nights… Wild Friday night at Tao on the strip & Calm Saturday night at a restaurant at the resort. I was happily surprised to see Mike Filsaime show up Friday night - he’s always up for a good time. As is Donna Fox, Erik Stafford, Robert Puddy, Socrates Socratous and many others (I think some people still owe me money … hmmm … who else was there? I’ll have to look at pictures now.)

Saturday night I encouraged everyone to celebrate my “40 Year Old Virgin” concept and do something that they’ve never done before this year and let me know about it. For my part, I’ve decided to do a 1/2 marathon (13.1 miles) on January 18th and have just started training for it. If I finish, I’ll reward myself with this: http://www.ArielAtomExperience.com - check it out - it’s gonna be fun!! Also search “Ariel Atom” on YouTube - there’s some hella-fun videos there too.

I have to admit, I do feel like I’ve reached some sort of turning point.

I thought I’d have all my sh*t worked out by now.

Overall, I’m pretty happy. I have a great wife, 2 wonderful toddlers, pretty decent income, have travelled quite a bit (but not enough), and truly enjoy what I’m doing - it’s fun.

Yet, I don’t really feel that ‘all my sh*t is worked out’.

I still spend almost every penny that I make. Some would say I live lavishly, but I think that’s all relatively. And to be honest with you, it’s driving me crazy that I don’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars right now to sink into real estate and/or the stock market. Everything is on sale right now. I’m guessing it’s gonna go down even more before it starts going up - so, I’ve got time.

But I doubt we’ll ever see a buying opportunity like this again in our lifetimes (and I plan on living another 60 years at least). So, I think a combination of the market conditions and me turning the big 4-0 has me really trying to shift my mindset. Then again, this entire year I’ve been focusing my energies on creating ‘relatively passive income’ - monthly recurring income - in my income streams.

So, that’s not going to change. But what I do with the money certainly is. I’ve gone through cycles in my life where I’ve been a better steward of my money. I know what to do for the most part - just have to actually do it. My ultimate goal here has not really changed: To have a certain amount of money coming in month after month with little ongoing effort, have a decent lifestyle, and put the excess money into good investments. That’s the goal.

Time to get to work.

Although, I have to kind of chuckle at myself…

I’m sitting literally 3 feet from my bed right now as I write this. So, my “commute” is literally 3 feet. LOL. And I really don’t *work* all that much. Today I have to write a software spec for Site Stealer 2 - coming out in December. Writing specs are a pain in the butt - that’s work to me … but it’ll probably take 3-4 hours tops (and I’ve been putting it off for over a week now) - and it’s what separates the men from the boys I think, too.

I won’t change the “Profitable Fun” aspect of my business. Profits still come first in that equation. But I won’t drop the fun.

Hmmm… here’s a thought:

I’ve got a couple of accountability partners for the mini-marathon training and I may even try to find a running group locally to keep me going.

But what about for my financial goals?

I mean - it takes discipline to ‘invest money first’ instead of blowin’ it on who knows what.

That’s what I need here: Accountability partners that share these goals. I’ll have to ask around.

Time to get focused.

Peace out for now,

Harris Fellman

Live Video Interviews??

Sep 8th 2008

I’ve been wanting to do live video interviews for a long time now. The closest I got, a couple years ago, I did two different *recorded video interviews* with Shawn Casey and Joel Comm. They turned out to be some of the highest converting interviews I ever did. (In the Joel Comm interview, that’s where I did the ‘Adsense Pirate’ character you see above.)

It was a major pain in the ass 2 years ago. (and this was just *recorded interviews*) Todd Gross helped me orchestrate and record the streams as a 3rd party. And then he edited all the streams together. Like I said - a major pain.

I also did a product called Web Traffic Videos right after the above interviews. I used Camtasia to record a skype video conversation and it worked *ok*. Skype didn’t like recording the camera for more than a few minutes at a time - it got choppier and choppier. I’m still concerned this will happen.

Anyway, so, today we set out to test all the top live streaming video services to see which (if any) could handle my long sought desire to do live streaming video interviews. I checked out Ustream, Justin.tv, Stickam, Mogulus, BlogTV, and PalTalk. (PalTalk sponsored that viral ‘your name is running for president’ campaign last month - so, I figured I’d throw them in there.)

Here’s the video review that I did of all 6 sites.

Video Services Review - Broadcast your self LIVE

Remember now, I was looking for the best service for *one particular function* and that was to do Live Streaming Video Interviews. The above video is recorded using BlogTV. It shows a side by side stream of my co-host; but when the show was live it was picture in picture.

Sadly, the technology is still not quite there yet. However, I still may do some live interviews with BlogTV. My only other alternative is to use Skype Video Chat and record it with Camtasia. (My recent test seemed better than the past — and I’m really close to just biting the bullet and getting a Mac b/c everything like this I see from a Mac is phenomenal!)

Alright, that’s it for now. Please let me know what you think of this review and feel free to let me know if there’s any other sites we missed.

Keep Having Fun,
